Physician Associate/Physician Assistant (PA) practice in Louisiana is governed by both state laws and administrative rules. Laws are enacted through the legislative process by the Louisiana Legislature and signed by the Governor, while rules are promulgated and enforced by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME) under the authority granted by those laws. Together, they establish the legal framework for PA licensure, scope of practice, and professional regulation throughout the state.

The Louisiana Academy of Physician Assistants (LAPA) is committed to helping members understand the laws and regulations that impact their clinical practice.

LAPA Legislative Committee

The LAPA Legislative Committee serves as the voice of Louisiana PAs at the Capitol. Working year-round, the committee monitors proposed legislation and regulations, advocating for policies that improve PA practice  and patient access to care, and opposing measures that unnecessarily restrict PA practice.

Our committee works closely with legislators, state agencies, healthcare organizations, and national PA leaders to protect, advance, and modernize the PA profession in Louisiana. Recent efforts have focused on expanding practice flexibility, reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers, strengthening the PA workforce, and ensuring Louisiana laws keep pace with the evolving needs of patients and healthcare teams.
